In the rapidly advancing world of artificial intelligence, understanding the terminology is essential. Here’s an updated glossary of key AI terms to keep you informed:

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines programmed to think and act like humans. These systems can learn from experience, adapt to new inputs, and perform tasks that typically require human intelligence.

Machine Learning (ML)

ML is a subset of AI that involves building systems that learn from data and improve over time without explicit programming. These algorithms identify patterns and make decisions with minimal human intervention.

Deep Learning

Deep Learning is a subset of ML involving neural networks with many layers (hence "deep") that enable machines to analyse data in a manner similar to the human brain. This approach is particularly effective for processing large amounts of unstructured data.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)

NLP is the branch of AI that enables machines to read, understand, and generate human language. This technology underpins virtual assistants, chatbots, and language translation services.

Neural Networks

Neural Networks are computing systems inspired by the biological neural networks of animal brains. These networks consist of layers of nodes, each representing a neuron, and are used to recognise patterns and solve complex problems.

Algorithm

An Algorithm is a set of rules or instructions given to an AI system to help it learn independently. Algorithms are utilised in various applications to process data and make decisions.

Data Mining

Data Mining involves discovering patterns and knowledge from large datasets. These data sources can include databases, text, web, and more. AI techniques are used to turn raw data into useful information.

Cognitive Computing

Cognitive Computing refers to systems that mimic human thought processes in a computerised model. These systems can understand, reason, learn, and interact naturally with humans, often utilising NLP and ML.

Supervised Learning

Supervised Learning is a type of ML where the model is trained on labelled data. The system learns from input-output pairs and is guided by a feedback loop until it can make accurate predictions independently.

Unsupervised Learning

Unsupervised Learning involves training a model on data that has no labels. The system tries to learn the underlying structure of the data and group similar data points without any prior training.

Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement Learning is a type of ML where an agent learns to make decisions by performing actions and receiving rewards or penalties. This trial-and-error approach helps the agent learn the best strategies to achieve its goals.

Big Data

Big Data refers to extremely large datasets that cannot be analysed using traditional data processing methods. These datasets can be used to uncover trends, patterns, and associations, especially relating to human behaviour and interactions.

Computer Vision

Computer Vision is a field of AI that enables machines to interpret and make decisions based on visual data from the world. Applications include image and video recognition, powering technologies like facial recognition and autonomous driving.

Robotics

Robotics is the branch of technology involving the design, construction, operation, and use of robots. AI enhances robots by enabling them to perform tasks autonomously, learn from their environment, and improve their performance over time.

Predictive Analytics

Predictive Analytics utilises historical data, statistical algorithms, and ML techniques to predict future outcomes. This technology helps organisations make informed decisions by forecasting trends and behaviours.

Chatbot

A Chatbot is an AI-powered software application designed to simulate human conversation. Chatbots are used in various customer service and support roles, offering a responsive and interactive experience.

Autonomous Systems

Autonomous Systems are self-governing systems that can perform tasks without human intervention. These systems use AI to make decisions and carry out actions independently.

Natural Language Generation (NLG)

NLG is a subfield of NLP that focuses on generating human language from data. It enables machines to create written or spoken narratives from a set of data inputs.

Sentiment Analysis

Sentiment Analysis uses NLP to determine the emotional tone behind a body of text. This technique is used to gauge opinions, attitudes, and emotions expressed in online reviews, social media, and other text sources.

Transfer Learning

Transfer Learning involves taking a pre-trained model on one task and adapting it for a related task. This approach can significantly reduce the amount of data and time required to train a model for a new application.

Edge AI

Edge AI refers to running AI algorithms locally on a hardware device rather than in a centralised data centre. This allows for faster processing and reduced latency, making it ideal for real-time applications.

Explainable AI (XAI)

XAI is an area of AI focused on making the decision-making process of AI systems transparent and understandable to humans. This helps in building trust and ensuring the ethical use of AI.

Model Training

Model Training is the process of teaching an AI model to make predictions or decisions by feeding it data and allowing it to learn patterns. The effectiveness of a model is measured by its ability to make accurate predictions on new, unseen data.

Bias in AI

Bias in AI occurs when an AI system produces results that are systematically prejudiced due to erroneous assumptions in the ML process. Addressing bias is crucial for ensuring fairness and equity in AI applications.

Overfitting

Overfitting happens when an ML model learns the details and noise in the training data to an extent that it negatively impacts its performance on new data. This means the model is too closely tailored to the training data and not generalisable.

Underfitting

Underfitting occurs when an ML model is too simple to capture the underlying patterns in the data. This results in poor performance on both the training data and new data.

Hyperparameters

Hyperparameters are settings configured before the ML training process begins and cannot be learned from the data. These include parameters like learning rate, batch size, and number of epochs.

Feature Engineering

Feature Engineering involves selecting, modifying, or creating new features from raw data to improve the performance of an ML model. It involves making domain-specific adjustments to enhance the model’s predictive power.

Gradient Descent

Gradient Descent is an optimisation algorithm used to minimise the cost function in ML models. It iteratively adjusts the model parameters to find the values that reduce the prediction error.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)

CNNs are a type of deep neural network particularly effective for analysing visual data. They use a grid-like topology and are employed in tasks like image and video recognition.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)

GANs are a class of ML models consisting of two neural networks: a generator and a discriminator. They are trained together to generate new, synthetic instances of data that can pass for real data.

Tokenisation

Tokenisation is the process of breaking text into individual units, such as words or phrases, to facilitate analysis in NLP tasks. This step is crucial for understanding and processing text data.

Embeddings

Embeddings are representations of data in a continuous vector space where similar items are mapped close to each other. They are used in NLP and other AI applications to capture semantic relationships.

Reinforcement Learning Agent

A Reinforcement Learning Agent is an entity that learns to make decisions by interacting with its environment and receiving rewards or penalties. The agent uses this feedback to improve its performance over time.

Turing Test

The Turing Test is a method of determining whether a machine exhibits human-like intelligence. If a human evaluator cannot distinguish between the machine and a human based on their responses, the machine is said to have passed the test.

AI Ethics

AI Ethics involves the moral implications and societal impact of AI technologies. It encompasses issues like fairness, transparency, accountability, and the potential consequences of AI on society.

Data Science

Data Science is an interdisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data. It is closely related to data mining and big data.

Superposition

In quantum computing, Superposition refers to the ability of a quantum system to be in multiple states at once. This principle allows quantum computers to process a vast number of possibilities simultaneously.

Quantum Computing

Quantum Computing leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to perform computation. Quantum computers use quantum bits (qubits) that can exist in multiple states simultaneously, enabling them to solve certain problems much faster than classical computers.
